That Dutchman's Farm is owned and operated by Maja and Willem van den Hoek, who in 1970 coming from the Netherlands (town of Soest) landed in Canada as newlywed immigrants. Starting their life together in British Columbia, working farms and forest they subsequently moved to Nova Scotia (sort of as "back to the landers"), ending up in Upper Economy, with their family and a thriving cheese-making business.
The cheese Willem produces is a "Farmstead Gouda." It is a true heritage cheese that has its roots in the Netherlands, reaching down into the early middle ages. That Dutchman's Farm is a cottage industry the whole family works in and feels proud of.
Even though Willem finds cheese a fascinating "Being" and loves working with it, his true love (besides his wife) lies outside:
He loves to garden with nature!
Over the years we laid out an extensive network of walking trials and waterways connecting gardens and ponds. Hidden amongst this lives an interesting collection of animals and plants tucked away in special settings. It is a work in progress and well worth a visit to explore. Something for the very young (animals to visit) and the very old (park benches everywhere!)
Something for the whole family to enjoy !
